Study Information

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of wastewater discharges on the biological communities of receiving streams. Indian Creek and the Blue River are located in Johnson County, a rapidly urbanizing area in northeastern Kansas. Both streams have been part of an ongoing study to evaluate water-quality conditions in streams throughout the county. In addition, both streams receive wastewater discharges from treatment facilities that have recently completed or are planning to complete capacity expansion and installation of upgraded nutrient reduction technologies. Wastewater discharge effects are being characterized by evaluating macroinvertebrate and periphyton communities, water chemistry, and streambed sediment chemistry at stream sites located upstream and downstream from wastewater discharges.
